SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the comparison between Gravity and the Big Bang Theory, specifically addressing the universe's expansion and the role of gravitational forces. It highlights that while gravity is expected to slow down the expansion, observations over the last fifteen years indicate that the expansion is actually accelerating. This acceleration is attributed to dark energy, which constitutes approximately 75% of the universe and is linked to Einstein's cosmological constant. The concept of dark energy remains a significant area of research in cosmology.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Big Bang Theory and its implications on cosmic expansion
  • Familiarity with gravitational forces and their effects on celestial bodies
  • Knowledge of dark energy and its role in the universe
  • Basic comprehension of Einstein's cosmological constant
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the properties and implications of dark energy in modern cosmology
  • Study Einstein's cosmological constant and its significance in theoretical physics
  • Explore observational evidence supporting the acceleration of the universe's expansion
  • Investigate alternative theories to the Big Bang and their explanations for cosmic phenomena
USEFUL FOR

Astronomers, physicists, cosmologists, and anyone interested in understanding the dynamics of the universe's expansion and the forces at play within it.

I don't know much about big bang theory except that it says that the universe is expanding..
What i don't understand is that why isn't the gravitational force pulling everything together ?
Is there any other force which is leading to the expansion??

Once the expansion got going, the theory was that gravity would slow it down. However about fifteen years ago it was discovered that the expansion is speeding up. Since then scientists have been looking for an explanation. The current theory is that there exists something called dark energy (which makes up about 75% of the universe) which is causing the acceleration of the expansion. It is supposed to be related to Einstein's cosmological constant. This whole idea is still somewhat tentative!
