How Do Complex Plane Transformations Affect Equations?

Click For Summary
Complex plane transformations can significantly impact the behavior of equations, particularly in relation to their variables. The discussion revolves around a specific problem and its solution, with confusion arising over the interpretation of the solution for part b. A participant questions the validity of the solution, suggesting that if x equals 4, then the equation u/(u^2 + v^2) should also equal 4. The conversation highlights the need for clarification on this point, with some suggesting a possible typo in the original solution. Overall, the complexities of transformations in the complex plane are emphasized, particularly in how they relate to specific values in equations.

Above is the problem and given solution. I am unable to understand the solution for part b - if x =4 then surely u/(u^2 + v^2) =4. Can someone please clarify this.

Thanks in advance.

Typo is the only thing that comes to mind.

I think it should be 4.

Question: A clock's minute hand has length 4 and its hour hand has length 3. What is the distance between the tips at the moment when it is increasing most rapidly?(Putnam Exam Question) Answer: Making assumption that both the hands moves at constant angular velocities, the answer is ## \sqrt{7} .## But don't you think this assumption is somewhat doubtful and wrong?
