SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the decision to pursue a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering after completing a B.S.M.E. and M.S.M.E. The participant has opportunities for research in both mechanical and electrical engineering, raising questions about industry preferences for specialized versus diversified backgrounds. It is concluded that a combined expertise in mechanical and electrical engineering is advantageous, particularly in fields like robotic design, where mechatronics is increasingly relevant.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of mechatronics principles
  • Familiarity with robotic design concepts
  • Knowledge of industry trends in engineering
  • Insight into academic pathways in engineering disciplines
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the impact of mechatronics on modern engineering practices
  • Explore career opportunities in robotic design and automation
  • Investigate interdisciplinary Ph.D. programs that combine mechanical and electrical engineering
  • Learn about industry expectations for engineers with dual expertise
USEFUL FOR

Graduate students in engineering, industry professionals considering advanced degrees, and anyone interested in the convergence of mechanical and electrical engineering in emerging technologies.

Just finished with my B.S.M.E. and now my M.S.M.E. and have been considering a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering. I've been offered research opportunities in both the mechanical and electrical engineering departments, so really it's up to me to decide.

Can anyone put an industry spin on what I am considering? Would those in industry prefer to see a student with a diversified background (both mechanical and electrical) or does that make me a jack of all trades, master of none?

I think things are converging where mechanics and electronics are coming together in robotic design for example. Our university even teaches course on mechatronics. So I think you're in a good position for future opportunities.
