Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around converting the density of ethylene glycol (antifreeze) to determine the volume in liters for a given mass of the liquid. It involves basic chemistry concepts related to density and unit conversion.

Discussion Character

  • Homework-related
  • Mathematical reasoning

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses confusion about the problem and seeks help with calculating the volume of ethylene glycol given its density.
  • Another participant asks for the definition of density, prompting a clarification of the concept.
  • A third participant provides the formula for density (d = m/v) and explains that it represents mass per unit of volume.
  • Subsequent posts guide the participant to identify the known quantities and suggest substituting them into the density equation.
  • A later reply rearranges the density formula to solve for volume and performs the necessary unit conversions from kilograms to grams, ultimately calculating the volume in liters.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

The discussion appears to be collaborative, with participants providing assistance and clarification. However, there is no explicit consensus on the final answer, as it is primarily a step-by-step problem-solving process.

Contextual Notes

Participants rely on the assumption that the density value is accurate and that the conversions between units are understood. There may be limitations in the clarity of the initial problem statement and the participants' understanding of the concepts involved.

:confused:

i am completely lost with this. mind you this is my first chemistry class, and my professor is not very good at explaining things.

Ethylene glycol (antifreeze) has a density of 1.11g/cm^3. What is the volume, in liters, of 5.8kg of this liquid?

HELP?

What is the definition of density ?

d = m/v

measure of mass per unit of volume

Now which of these 3 quantities are you given ? Can you substitute them into the equation ?

rearranging d = m/v gives v = m/d. Convert 5.8 kg into grams since the density is in grams, by multiplying by 1000 (1 kg = 1 x 10^3 g).

v = 5800g/(1.11g/cm^3) = 5,225.23 cm^3.

You need the answer in liters, and 1x10^-3 L = 1 cm^3. Therefore, (1x10^-3 L/cm^3) * (5,225.23 cm^3) = 5.225 L.
