Course advice for Theoretical Physics at Cambridge University

AI Thread Summary
Choosing between the Natural Science Tripos and the Mathematical Tripos for theoretical physics at Cambridge University depends on the desired balance of mathematics and practical physics experience. The Mathematical Tripos focuses more on theoretical concepts without laboratory work, while the Natural Science Tripos includes practical components. The "Maths with Physics" option allows students to experience both curricula, providing insight into teaching methods before making a final decision. It is advisable to start with the Maths with Physics option and consider transferring to Natural Sciences after the first year. Ultimately, the choice should align with personal interests in mathematical rigor and practical physics application.

I want to apply to Cambridge University for theoretical physics for undergraduate degree.I want to ask that should i chose natural science tripos or mathematical tripos for theoretical physics?

I am also aware about the option(b) 'maths with physics' in mathematical tripos, but it is a one year degree course, after that should i stay in mathematical tripos or natural science tripos? Also what is the difference between the physics taught in natsci course vs physics taught in mathematical tripos.

As my passion lies in both mathematical rigor but i also does not want to know less physics(for theoretical physics ,as being in mathematical tripos) also i know that natsci does have enough mathematical rigor. Again repeating -physics taught in natsci course vs physics taught in mathematical tripos? Main concern is:which course will we better for theoretical physics?

I did study Mathematics at Cambridge, although that was 20 years ago so my personal experience is likely not of use to you. The main difference is that the applied mathematics/theoretical physics courses on the Mathematics Tripos do not contain any element of practical laboratory work, whilst the physics courses on the Natural Science Tripos do. In later years there is significant overlap, with students on both triposes being able to take courses taught by either DAMTP, DoP or IoA (Institute of Astronomy).

Mathematics with Physics is perhaps the obvious choice. The effect of this option is that Paper 4 of Part I of the Mathematics Tripos (Number and Sets / Dynamics and Relativity) is replaced by the Physics paper from Part I of Natrual Sciences, and the corresponding lecture courses are replaced* by the whole of the physics course, including practical laboratory work. It will therefore give you experience of the teaching methods of both triposes, which will help inform your decision as to what you do subsequently.

*This is not a 1-1 substitution; the physics course takes more time than the two maths courses.

That is, I suspect, not a decision you can sensibly make until you have completed the first year, and nor will your College expect you to make it until then.

Bear in mind that which course you initially apply for will determine who interviews you and which STEP papers you are asked to take as a condition of your offer.

TL;DR Summary: What topics to cover to safely say I know arithmetic ? I am learning arithmetic from Indian NCERT textbook. Currently I have finished addition ,substraction of 2 digit numbers and divisions, multiplication of 1 digit numbers. I am moving pretty slowly. Can someone tell me what topics to cover first to build a framework and then go on in detail. I want to learn fast. It has taken me a year now learning arithmetic. I want to speed up. Thanks for the help in advance. (I also...
Hi community My aim is to get into research about atoms, specifically, I want to do experimental research that explores questions like: 1. Why do Gallium/Mercury have low melting points 2. Why are there so many exceptions and inconsistencies when it comes to explaining molecular structures / reaction mechanisms in inorganic and organic chemistry 3. Experimental research about fundamental Quantum Mechanics, such as the one being followed by Hiroshima university that proved that observing...
guys i am currently studying in computer science engineering [1st yr]. i was intrested in physics when i was in high school. due to some circumstances i chose computer science engineering degree. so i want to incoporate computer science engineering with physics and i came across computational physics. i am intrested studying it but i dont know where to start. can you guys reccomend me some yt channels or some free courses or some other way to learn the computational physics.
