SUMMARY

The density of a 1938 nickel can be calculated using the formula density = m/v, where m is the mass and v is the volume. The nickel has a diameter of 2.11×10-2 m and a thickness of 1.95×10-3 m, with a weight of 4.94×10-2 N. To find the volume, the area of the circular face is calculated using A = πr2, which is then multiplied by the thickness to determine the total volume.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic physics concepts, specifically weight and mass
  • Familiarity with geometric formulas for calculating the area of a circle
  • Knowledge of unit conversions, particularly between weight and mass
  • Basic algebra skills for manipulating equations
NEXT STEPS
  • Learn how to convert weight (N) to mass (kg) using the acceleration due to gravity
  • Study the formula for the volume of a cylinder: V = A × h
  • Explore the concept of density and its applications in material science
  • Practice similar density calculation problems involving different shapes and materials
USEFUL FOR

Students in physics or engineering courses, educators teaching density and volume concepts, and anyone interested in practical applications of geometry and physics in real-world scenarios.

Homework Statement

A 1938-nickel has a diameter of 2.11×10-2 m, a thickness of 1.95×10-3 m, and weighs 4.94×10-2 N.
What is its density?

Homework Equations

density=m/v ? or density =w/vg

The Attempt at a Solution

cant find the volume, I feel like I should drop out of university it's the simplest problem and I'm completely stuck.

v= pir^2 ?

The nickel is circular so the area of the circle is A=\pi r^2, which you will multiply by the thickness to get the volume.
