Design iPhone Apps: UROP Project | C++ to Objective C

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around a participant's inquiry about the feasibility of learning Objective C quickly enough to contribute to a UROP project focused on designing iPhone apps, given their background in C++. The scope includes programming language acquisition and project suitability.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses concern about their lack of experience in Objective C despite having basic C++ skills and questions whether they can become productive in a short time.
  • Another participant suggests that someone with a solid understanding of C++ can generally learn other programming languages, including Objective C, although they acknowledge it may be more challenging for someone with limited experience.
  • A participant questions the relevance of designing iPhone apps within a physics research context, indicating a potential disconnect between the project and traditional physics research.
  • There is a suggestion to share the project description publicly to gather more opinions, rather than relying on a private message for feedback.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the ease of transitioning from C++ to Objective C or the appropriateness of the project within a physics research framework. Multiple viewpoints remain regarding the participant's ability to learn and the project's relevance.

Contextual Notes

Uncertainties include the specific requirements of the UROP project and the participant's prior programming experience, which may affect their learning curve.

Who May Find This Useful

Students considering UROP projects, individuals transitioning between programming languages, and those interested in the intersection of technology and research may find this discussion relevant.

Hi all,

I've applied to several UROP (Undergrad Research Opportunity Program) projects and I've gotten accepted to four, and one of them involves designing iPhone apps.

The problem is... I've never programmed in Objective C, but I do know a fair amount of C++ (very basic OOP skills). Is it possible to learn Objective C and be productive in this project within a short time, or should I just pick a different project?

i need an answer as soon as possible! please someone respond. :(

Sure, it's possible. If all you know is a little C++, then maybe it would be more difficult, but in general someone who knows C++ well can pick up most other languages easily. Sounds like a funny research project though.

Thanks for the reply - but why is it "funny"?

Are you in physics? I just can't picture a research project that would involve designing iphone apps

JawiB - do you mind if I send you a PM of the description of the project, and you can give me your opinion about it?

If you want. It might be more beneficial if you posted it in the open so that I'm not the only possible opinion you'll get ;)
