SUMMARY

Blaise Pascal did not explicitly document the barrel experiment in his treaties, specifically the "Traitez de Liqueurs." The discussion highlights that the maximum height for water pressure is approximately 10.3 meters, which is critical for understanding the limits of such experiments. One participant attempted the experiment using a 10-meter tube but did not achieve a barrel burst, indicating that the pressure required to burst a barrel exceeds the height of the water column used. This confirms the theoretical limits established by Pascal's principles of fluid mechanics.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Pascal's principles of fluid mechanics
  • Familiarity with the concept of hydrostatic pressure
  • Knowledge of the "Traitez de Liqueurs" by Blaise Pascal
  • Basic experimental setup for fluid dynamics
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the principles of hydrostatic pressure and its applications
  • Study the historical context and significance of Pascal's "Traitez de Liqueurs"
  • Explore experimental methods for demonstrating fluid pressure effects
  • Investigate modern applications of Pascal's theories in engineering
USEFUL FOR

Students of physics, historians of science, and anyone interested in fluid dynamics and the historical experiments of Blaise Pascal.

Hello, I would like to know if Pascal really made the experiment of the barrel.
I have looked for in his treaties(traitez de liqueurs) but I have not seen any reference to the barrel. Somebody knows if Pascal speaks somewhere of the barrel?
I tried to make the experiment with a tube of 10m but the barrel did not burst. Somebody has made this experiment?
Excuses by my poor English(from Spain) .

Thanks,Alberto

You nearly did it! The maximum height for water should be around 10.3 meters. :D

Unless you are as clever as a tree!
