Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the experiences of a student in chemistry and linear algebra classes, focusing on their academic performance and interactions with peers. The scope includes personal anecdotes, feelings of competition, and opinions on the nature of chemistry compared to physics.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested, Personal anecdotes, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant shares their academic journey, noting a significant improvement in their grades from a 20% to a 97% on midterms, while expressing satisfaction that their performance negatively impacted their classmates' ability to receive a grade curve.
  • Another participant expresses empathy for the classmates who were upset about the grading situation, questioning whether the abbreviation "LA" refers to Linear Algebra.
  • Some participants express a sense of vindication and enjoyment in outperforming their peers, with one stating they intend to continue this trend in future math classes.
  • There are comments suggesting a belief that chemistry is a simplified version of physics, with one participant advocating for the abolition of certain chemistry topics.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express mixed feelings about the situation; while some feel satisfaction in their academic performance relative to their peers, others show empathy towards those struggling. There is also a disagreement regarding the value and complexity of chemistry compared to physics.

Contextual Notes

Participants' views on the nature of chemistry and its relationship to physics are subjective and reflect personal opinions rather than established academic consensus.

Who May Find This Useful

Students in STEM fields, particularly those studying chemistry and physics, may find the discussion relatable regarding academic pressures and peer dynamics.

I failed my first chem midterm by a pathetic score of 20%. The next midterm I got 97% on the midterm I am now back on 70% average in class.

But because all the chemists in my pchem class are destroying the average, the prof couldn't curve it.

Now in my LA class, at least 1/3 of the class is filled with those chemists, a few econ and math majors. I think almost no physics major in the class lol. I don't know what the other 2/3s are.

Anyways I just got back my LA midterm and I got 96.3%, the average was 54%, so yes pretty much all the chemists were complaining outside the class after. I feel happy that I screwed all of them because now the prof can't curve it ahhahaah

lol That happened to me before, but I totally felt bad for them and they were really pissed off at me. LA = Linear Algebra?

yeah, except I don't feel bad, I feel great because I am going to keep screwing them in their math classes just to be a dick

lololol

I'll make them feel bad for ever making me feel stupid

I know I am pathetic, but hey.

I always felt like chemistry was babified physics.

It is and it should be abolished. Maybe leave out ochem and the solution chem stuff, we let the boring people study it
