Different ways of inserting image in a post

Inserting images in forum posts can be done in two main ways: uploading directly to the forum or embedding from an external source. When an image is uploaded directly, it appears as an "Attached Files" thumbnail below the post. However, images can also be embedded without showing as attachments by using the "FULL IMAGE" option after uploading, or by copying and pasting images from other websites. Recent changes ensure that images from external links are saved on the forum server, preventing broken links if the original image is removed. This method offers more control and reliability for displaying images in posts.

Hello ,

I am curious about an apparently small difference while inserting an image in a post .

Recently while helping a member I inserted an image here https://www.physicsforums.com/threads/pulley-constraints-problem.926268/#post-5846690

This is what I do . If I want to put an image then I first upload a picture using the upload button and then paste the link of that image in the icon just right to the smiley .This embeds the picture in the post but also shows it as an "Attached Files" under the post .

But I have seen members putting up images without thumbnail of their images being shown under their post as "Attached Files" .

For example , this thread
https://www.physicsforums.com/threads/how-to-avoid-the-use-of-a-pseudo-force.925724/ .In this the OP has put the pictures in his post , but their is no "Attached Files" under his posts.

It seems their is a shortcut to put image in the post which I am not aware of .Or may be there is a different way of attaching image in the post. Not that it makes a lot of difference .I just happened to observe this and felt like asking .

So how do you insert an image in the post so that there is no "Attached Files" seen under your post .

Thanks

If the picture is uploaded elsewhere, you can directly embed it: . The forum still makes an attachment out of it but it is shown as image only.

So if I upload an image on PF and then insert it in my post , then the inserted image will always show as "Attached Files" under the post ?

Correct, a hot linked image from another website will be automatically uploaded as an attachment.

And in case the inserted image from other website is removed from that site , it still shows nicely in the post as a copy has automatically been saved on PF . So now , no chance of a broken link ?

I have seen some posts from earlier threads where images are not displayed due to being saved on some other site and getting lost over a period of time .

Exactly. This is something we implemented several months ago, so some older threads might have broken images.

Did that have anything to do with the Photobucket debacle? :wideeyed:

I've always discouraged hotlinking images at MHB (because of the lack of control), and while there is an add-on to automatically convert them to attachments, the vB implementation is kind of hit and miss from what I've heard, and because there are relatively few posted, I just manually convert hotlinked images to attachments myself.

No what happened there? For us, most threads older than a few years images went bad.

After you upload the image, you should see a small thumbnail of it below the message box, with two buttons, THUMBNAIL and FULL IMAGE. Clicking on FULL IMAGE inserts the image into the post at the location of the cursor. In this case you do not get the additional thumbnail.

With most images you find on the net you can just right-click on them and select 'copy image', then right-click in the message box and select 'paste'. Should automatically embed it (and as far as I understand the recent changes, automatically store it on the PF server).
e.g.:

A better reason for discouraging: Hotlinking and Bandwidth Theft

From what I've heard (on one of the motorcycle sites I participate in), once you reach a certain level of storage for your images (2 GB, I believe), they ask you to upgrade your free membership to a paid membership. A lot of people had images posted on PhotoBucket and reached the limit, but decided not to opt for the paid membership. This resulted in their images in the motorcycle site being broken.
