Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the search for books that provide solved problems specifically in the field of the Calculus of Variations. Participants express a desire for resources that include problem setups, derivation of differential equations, and analysis of solutions, similar to the Schaum's series.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant mentions finding a book by Krasnov but seeks additional resources similar to Schaum's series for practice.
  • Another participant suggests checking out problem books published by Springer, noting a variety of titles available.
  • A follow-up response acknowledges the suggestion and notes the absence of a specific volume for Variational Calculus, while mentioning that some analysis books may contain relevant chapters.
  • Additional resources are shared, including links to books that reportedly have good sections with worked examples.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the need for more resources in the area of Variational Calculus, but there is no consensus on specific titles that meet the criteria outlined by the original poster.

Contextual Notes

There is a noted limitation in the availability of dedicated resources for Variational Calculus, with some participants indicating that related topics may only be covered in broader analysis texts.

Hi folks,

There are plenty of books with theory, but to practice I only found one book by Krasnov. I am looking something like Schaums series for the Calculus of Variations. Do you know if something like that exists?

I want to practice, seting up the problem (the integral), getting the differential equations, solving them, analyzing when it is a min or a max, or if it exists etc.

Thanks!

I didn't know those series, thanks for that.

I had a look and apparently there is no specific volume for Variational Calculus, there are some on analysis that may contain a chapter maybe.
