Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the search for a converging lens for a physics experiment. Participants explore various sources and alternatives for obtaining such a lens, including local stores and common household items.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about where to purchase a converging lens for an independent physics study.
  • Another suggests using a magnifying glass as a potential alternative to a converging lens.
  • A participant humorously admits to having discarded their science toys and expresses surprise at returning to physics.
  • There is a suggestion that wearing glasses, particularly if farsighted, might provide a suitable lens.
  • One participant mentions a specific store, Mastermind Toys, as a potential source for a magnifying glass.
  • A link to a product page for a magnifying glass is shared, with a question about its suitability as a converging lens.
  • Another participant confirms that a common magnifying glass functions as a converging lens and notes its availability in various stores.
  • A lens from reading glasses is also proposed as a viable option.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that a magnifying glass can serve as a converging lens, but there is no consensus on the best source for obtaining one. Various suggestions are made without a definitive resolution on the most effective approach.

Contextual Notes

Some assumptions about the availability of specific products and the definitions of lens types may not be fully explored. The discussion does not resolve the effectiveness of alternatives proposed.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals looking for practical solutions to obtain optical lenses for experiments, particularly in educational settings or independent studies in physics.

Does anybody know where to get "Converging lens"?

Hi,
I work on an independent study course for physics and it requires converging lens
in order to begin the experiment.

I thought of going to a local optical stores and asking them for purchase
but I don't think the Business Depot guys would sell them.. (Yes I live in Canada lol)

does anybody know where I could get them?

Thank you for viewing this post.

Do you have a magnifying glass?

lol nope, I've thrown away all my science toys when I've graduated from elementary school
never thought that I would come back to do high school physics :(

Shame on you! But getting your hands on a magnifying glass shouldn't be too hard. (And it might come in handy!)

Also, if you wear glasses take a look at them. If you're farsighted, you might get lucky.

Do you have Discovery Channel stores in Canada?

lol thanks guys
I think I've found the right store
Mastermind toys lol

Can you just boot to it externally?

a regular magnifying glass..
could it be used as converging lens?
I believe that is what Doc Al was telling you.

A common magnifying glass represents a converging lens. You can buy a magnifying glass nearly anywhere they have an office products aisle. Many 99 cent stores even carry them.

A lens from reading glasses would also work.
