Does the angle of a beam fixed at two points affect the method?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around whether the angle of a beam fixed at two points affects the calculations involved in analyzing its behavior under a downward load. Participants explore the implications of the beam being positioned at an angle, such as 45 degrees, compared to the more common parallel orientation to the x-axis.

Discussion Character

  • Homework-related, Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions if the angle of the beam affects calculations, specifically regarding reaction forces when the beam is subjected to a downward load.
  • Another participant requests an example problem to clarify the approach to solving the issue, indicating that additional context would be beneficial.
  • A third participant suggests that a figure would be necessary to fully understand the problem statement and provide accurate advice.
  • Another participant agrees that without a visual representation of the problem, it is challenging to offer guidance.
  • A link to an external resource about cantilever beams is provided, which may contain relevant information for the discussion.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that a clear problem statement, potentially with a figure, is essential for providing useful advice. However, there is no consensus on how the angle specifically affects the calculations, as the discussion remains unresolved.

Contextual Notes

The discussion lacks specific examples or detailed calculations, and the assumptions regarding the beam's loading conditions and constraints are not fully articulated.

Homework Statement

if a beam fixed at two points is on an angle say 45 degrees from the x or y-axis instead of running parallel to x-axis in most questions does this effect calculations? The force acting upon it would be a load directly downwards

Homework Equations

N/A

The Attempt at a Solution

As i can do cantilever beam questions and find reaction forces etc i have neglected to add information to points 2 and 3, i am only looking for an answer to whether it is effected or whether you would solve this problem in the usual way

Can you give an example problem and show how you are working it? That would help a lot. Thanks.

A figure is really required to make the problem statement clear.
