Editor for tex formulas for a PF document

Hello,

If I want to publish a document with formulas on the site, which (offline) editor can I best use for that? I have OpenOffice, can that be used?

You can write it in Open Office but I don't think it compiles it. Here are some useful hints and one personal suggestion as an answer:
