The discussion revolves around a report from the NSA UFO archives titled "Exploitation Report - A Fragment, Metal Recovered in the Republic of the Congo," which is noted for its poor quality, making it difficult to read. Despite this, some users have managed to extract information, particularly a comment regarding the specimen's exposure to temperatures exceeding 2500°F. The fragment is described as a motor or generator armature made from silicon steel laminate on a soft iron core, with speculation that it may be linked to a Soviet test program. Participants express interest in finding related documents within NSA or CIA files, including a mention of a report on UFO sightings over Belgian Congo uranium mines from 1952. There is a consensus that there was significant reported activity in the region during that time, prompting further exploration of available archives for additional insights.

A report titled:

Exploitation Report - A Fragment, Metal Recovered in the Republic of the Congo (http://www.nsa.gov/ufo/ufo00018.pdf)

in the NSA UFO archives looks interesting, unfortuantly the report is of such poor quality its unreadable. Anybody got any other information sources on this ?

I have had some luck reading these docs by using a little image enhancement [ I have read this one before]. Even without enhancement much of the doc can be read. On pdf page 2, section III, part C, one interesting comment made is that "surface features and microstructures of the specimen indicate exposure to temperatures of over 2500 F". But this device [fragment], which is described mainly as a motor or generator armature - made from a silicon steel laminate on a soft iron core - was, IMO, likely part of some kind of Soviet test program. I believe there is a related document somewhere in the NSA or CIA files.

This was an interesting report. I will get back with what I have when time allows.

This may be what I was thinking of. See the report
Flying Saucers over Belgian Congo Uranium Mines; 8/16/52

http://www.foia.cia.gov/search.asp?pageNumber=1&freqReqRecord=undefined&refinedText=undefined&freqSearchText=undefined&txtSearch=UFO&exactPhrase=&allWords=&anyWords=&withoutWords=&documentNumber=&startCreatedMonth=&startCreatedDay=&startCreatedYear=&endCreatedMonth=&endCreatedDay=&endCreatedYear=0&startReleasedMonth=&startReleasedDay=&startReleasedYear=&endReleasedMonth=&endReleasedDay=&endReleasedYear=0&sortOrder=ASC

but I don't think so. There is something else interesting...I'll keep looking.

Edit: FYI, it seems there was quite a bit of reported activity in this area back then.
