Fiber Optic Cabling: SC & ST Connectors Explained

AI Thread Summary
The SC and ST connectors refer to different types of fiber optic connectors. The ST connector is round and resembles a BNC connector, utilizing a push-and-twist mechanism for connection. In contrast, the SC connector is rectangular and designed for a slide-in slot connection. Fiber optic cables fall into two main categories: single-mode fibers, which have small cores (approximately 9 microns in diameter) and transmit infrared laser light at wavelengths of 1,300 to 1,550 nanometers, and multi-mode fibers, which feature larger cores (about 62.5 microns in diameter) and transmit infrared light from LEDs at wavelengths of 850 to 1,300 nanometers.

The ST and SC fiber cables are the difference in the connectors on the end.
-ST connector is round and looks like a BNC connector (push and twist).
This page has a pic of an ST connector: http://www.datapro.net/products/1441.html
-SC connector is rectangular (slide in slot).
This page has a pic of an SC connector: http://www.datapro.net/products/1443.html
(There are links on those pages with other types of connectors as well.)

More info you didn't ask for...
Two main catagories of fiber cables:
->Single-mode fibers have small cores (about 3.5 x 10-4 inches or 9 microns in diameter) and transmit infrared laser light (wavelength = 1,300 to 1,550 nanometers).

->Multi-mode fibers have larger cores (about 2.5 x 10-3 inches or 62.5 microns in diameter) and transmit infrared light (wavelength = 850 to 1,300 nm) from light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

This week, I saw a documentary done by the French called Les sacrifiés de l'IA, which was presented by a Canadian show Enquête. If you understand French I recommend it. Very eye-opening. I found a similar documentary in English called The Human Cost of AI: Data workers in the Global South. There is also an interview with Milagros Miceli (appearing in both documentaries) on Youtube: I also found a powerpoint presentation by the economist Uma Rani (appearing in the French documentary), AI...
