Fraction solar power due to UV

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The fraction of solar energy attributable to UV radiation is a critical factor in solar panel efficiency. To calculate the impact of excluding UV frequencies, one must integrate the spectral density specifically over the UV wavelength range. Referencing "Fundamentals of Heat & Mass Transfer" by Incropera & DeWitt provides foundational knowledge necessary for these calculations. Understanding this relationship allows for more accurate predictions of solar energy capture.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of spectral density and its integration
  • Familiarity with solar energy principles
  • Basic knowledge of heat transfer concepts
  • Access to "Fundamentals of Heat & Mass Transfer" by Incropera & DeWitt
NEXT STEPS
  • Research methods for integrating spectral density over specific wavelength ranges
  • Study the impact of UV radiation on solar panel efficiency
  • Explore advanced heat transfer textbooks for deeper insights
  • Investigate solar panel technology that optimizes UV energy capture
USEFUL FOR

Solar energy researchers, engineers designing solar panels, and students studying heat transfer and solar energy principles will benefit from this discussion.

Hello,

I was wondering what fraction of the energy delivered by the sun is due to UV-radiation. For example, when I have a solar panel which "catches" 1kJ of solar energy. What will happen if there would be no UV frequencies in the solar spectrum? How many percent less energy will I capture? Can I calculate this myself?

Thanks in advance

You would integrate the spectral density over just the wavelength of UV instead of all wavelenghs as is usually done. See Fundamentals of Heat & Mass Transfer, Incropera & DeWitt or any other good undergraduate heat transfer textbook.
