Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the search for free graphing software capable of plotting polar coordinates and irreducible functions. Participants explore various software options and their capabilities, focusing on usability without requiring specific function forms.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant requests a powerful graphing tool for polar coordinates that does not require expressing r as a function of t.
  • Another participant expresses interest in being informed if a new program is developed.
  • A suggestion is made for a free program called Polar Plot, though its suitability is later questioned.
  • Participants mention that free compilers for C/C++/Fortran are available, which include graphing packages.
  • A specific mention of Salford's free Fortran 90 compiler is made, highlighting its integration capabilities and quality.
  • A later comment indicates that the Polar Plot package may not meet the initial needs expressed.
  • One participant expresses gratitude for the information about the Salford Fortran 90 compiler.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the best graphing software, and multiple options are presented without clear agreement on their effectiveness.

Contextual Notes

Some participants express uncertainty about the suitability of the suggested software, particularly the Polar Plot package, indicating a lack of definitive recommendations.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals interested in graphing polar coordinates, particularly in the context of physics or mathematics, may find this discussion relevant.

Hi,

I'm currently doing some work with black holes and I need a powerful graphing tool.

Are there any free, downloadable graphing programs that can graph polar coordinates without having to make r(t) = ...?

I have some irreducable functions I need to view.

Thanks!

Astronomy news on Phys.org
if u make such program u got to tell me when ur done and share it

C/C++/Fortran compilers are free and they all have graphing pkges.excel.

Speaking of which, Salford has a free version of their Fortan 90 compiler which includes a graphing package. It's a serious system with a marvelous compiler - one of the best! (It can also integrate with .net so you can take advantage of all it has to offer.)

P.S. I just checked out the Polar Plot package I mentioned earlier - it's probably not suitable so don't bother.

Salford fortran 90? I'll check it out.

Thanks a lot!
