SUMMARY

The Planetary Society's solar sail initiative has faced challenges, including a failure to achieve its objectives with its second solar sail. The discussion highlights potential applications of solar sails, such as deflecting large asteroids and comets from Earth, and propelling spacecraft to interstellar destinations using powerful lasers or focused beams of light. While these concepts are theoretically possible, their efficiency remains a significant concern, particularly for long-duration missions beyond the outer planets like Jupiter and Saturn.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of solar sail technology and its principles
  • Knowledge of asteroid deflection techniques
  • Familiarity with propulsion methods, including laser propulsion
  • Basic concepts of interstellar travel and spacecraft navigation
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the latest advancements in solar sail technology
  • Explore asteroid deflection strategies and their feasibility
  • Investigate laser propulsion systems for spacecraft
  • Study the physics of interstellar travel and the challenges involved
USEFUL FOR

Aerospace engineers, astrophysicists, space enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the future of space exploration and planetary defense.

I don't know how long this solar sail idea has been here , the Planetary society's second solar sail failed to achieve its objective right ? I am interested in the applications of this technique.

1) Is it possible to use them to deflect large asteroids and comets away from the Earth ?

2) Is it possible to propel a spacecraft with solar sail using a powerful laser or some other kind of focused beam of light to interstellar destinations ? even though it might take a long time to reach there.

3) Is it possible to propel it beyond , say Jupiter, Saturn just by sunlight ?

Have you checked the wikipedia article? It answers most of those questions.

All those things are possible*, but their efficiency is questionable.

*even the Pioneer and Voyager probes and New Horizons will reach interstellar distances eventually, but they'll need hundreds of thousands of years for that.
