Gauss's Law - A hollow sphere with inner and outer radius

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

This discussion focuses on applying Gauss's Law to a hollow spherical shell with an inner radius R1 and an outer radius R2, carrying a uniformly distributed charge Q. The key calculations involve determining the electric field (E) in three regions: inside the sphere (r < R1), within the volume of the shell (R1 < r < R2), and outside the sphere (r > R2). The solution emphasizes using the concept of electric flux through a Gaussian surface to derive the electric field in each region.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Gauss's Law
  • Familiarity with electric fields and flux concepts
  • Knowledge of spherical coordinates
  • Basic principles of electrostatics
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the derivation of electric fields using Gauss's Law
  • Learn about electric flux and its applications in different geometries
  • Explore the concept of Gaussian surfaces in electrostatics
  • Investigate the behavior of electric fields in various charge distributions
USEFUL FOR

Students of physics, particularly those studying electromagnetism, educators teaching electrostatics, and anyone preparing for exams involving Gauss's Law and electric fields.

Gauss's Law - A hollow sphere with inner and outer radius!

Homework Statement

A spherical shell of inner radius R1 and outer R2 carries a charge Q that is uniformly distributed throughout its volume. No other charges present.
a)calculate E inside the sphere
b)within the volume
c)outside the sphere

Homework Equations

Im not really sure what to do, i understand how to calculate for a hollow sphere without a surface thickness, but this has got me stuck. any help would be appreciated

hi roman15!

(try using the X2 icon just above the Reply box )

hint: what is the flux through a sphere of radius
a) < R1
b) > R1 but < R2
c) > R2 ?
