SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on solving a common GRE exam question involving similar triangles, specifically the equation $\dfrac{800}{7000}=\dfrac{x}{1400}$. Participants demonstrate the simplification process, ultimately revealing that x equals 160. The conversation emphasizes the importance of recognizing the simplicity in the problem rather than resorting to complex calculations, such as producing 112,000 = 700x.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of similar triangles and their properties
  • Basic algebraic manipulation skills
  • Familiarity with GRE exam question formats
  • Ability to simplify fractions and ratios
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the properties of similar triangles in geometry
  • Practice GRE-style math problems focusing on ratios and proportions
  • Learn techniques for simplifying algebraic expressions
  • Explore common pitfalls in GRE problem-solving strategies
USEFUL FOR

Students preparing for the GRE, educators teaching geometry concepts, and anyone looking to improve their problem-solving skills in mathematics.

This seems to be rather common GRE Exam Question
Which appears to harder that what it is
It looks like a similar triagle solution
$\dfrac{800}{7000}=\dfrac{x}{1400}$

800/7000 = x/1400

It's a little bit of smoke.

80/700 = x/1400

8/70 = x/1400

8/7 = x/140

8/1 = x/20

Look easier?

Anyone whose first move is to produce 112,000 = 700x simply isn't paying attention.

"Anyone whose first move is to produce 112,000 = 700x" solves problems like this by immediately plugging numbers into a calculator!

actually the answer is
x=160
