SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the preparation of Raman spectral data for reporting and potential publication. The author expresses concern over the acceptability of data manipulations, specifically background subtraction, due to fluorescent emissions obscuring spectral peaks. It is established that while background subtraction is generally discouraged for diffraction data, it may be necessary in cases where fluorescence interferes with peak clarity. The author seeks guidance on best practices and journal selection for reporting these data.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Raman spectroscopy and its data representation
  • Familiarity with data manipulation techniques, particularly background subtraction
  • Knowledge of journal submission guidelines for scientific publications
  • Experience with spectral data analysis and interpretation
NEXT STEPS
  • Research best practices for background subtraction in Raman spectroscopy
  • Explore specific journal guidelines for reporting Raman spectral data
  • Learn about fluorescence interference in spectroscopic data
  • Investigate software tools for spectral data analysis and manipulation
USEFUL FOR

Researchers, scientists, and authors preparing Raman spectral data for publication, as well as anyone involved in the analysis and reporting of spectroscopic data in scientific journals.

I have some raman data that I would like to prepare for inclusion in a report (and possibly publication in archival journal). The author guidelines for journals have not proven helpful in answering whether it is acceptable to perform data manipulations such as background subtraction. It has been my experience that this should never be done for diffraction data, but in this case the fluorescent emission from the sample obscures the otherwise well-defined peaks when put into figure format.

Any tips or guidelines would be greatly appreciated!
