Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around measuring the air flow rate in a model chimney designed for a thesis project. The context includes the construction of a model chimney and the use of a gas torch to simulate a fire, with a specific focus on the air flow through an aluminum duct.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • A participant seeks assistance in determining the flow rate of air through a one-meter-long model flue using a gas torch.
  • Another participant shares a personal anecdote about creating an updraft in a chimney using crumpled newspaper, although this does not directly address the flow rate measurement.
  • A third participant expresses interest in the original poster's thesis topic.
  • The original poster elaborates on their thesis, which involves a chimney heat recovery unit and describes a model that raises the temperature of water using a Bunsen burner.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

The discussion does not present a consensus on methods for measuring air flow rate, and multiple perspectives are shared without resolution.

Contextual Notes

The discussion lacks specific methodologies for measuring air flow and does not clarify the assumptions or conditions under which the proposed ideas might be applicable.

Who May Find This Useful

Students or researchers interested in chimney design, heat recovery systems, or experimental methods for measuring air flow in fluid dynamics may find this discussion relevant.

I all, new to this forum and just looking for a bit of help in my final year thesis.
I have built a model chimney and using a gas torch to represent a fire. I would like to know is there any way i would be able to get the flow rate of the air going through the model flue (alimumin duct). It is one meter in length . Thanks

diar1000, Welcome to Physics Forums!

When I was young my family lived in a home with a fireplace in the living room. Before lighting the fire, my father crumpled up a few newspaper sheets and jammed them up in the chimney flue. We first lighted that paper to start the updraft, then the main fire materials. As a result, our living room never filled with smoke.

This isn't really an answer to your question I am just interested. What is your thesis on?

Its on a chimney heat recovery unit. i have produced a modle one with a coil exchanger wrapped about the flue of a chimney and using gravity flow I've manged to raise temperture in a 10 litre tank by 15 by only using a bunson burner.
