Homemade elevator from electric motor

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on constructing a homemade elevator using an electric motor with a 42 mm shaft operating at 1800 rpm. The goal is to lift approximately 200 pounds to a height of twenty feet, focusing on safety and efficiency. Participants emphasize that this elevator is intended solely for equipment and supplies, not for transporting people, due to safety regulations and the need for design certification and liability insurance.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of electric motor specifications and performance
  • Knowledge of pulley systems and gear mechanics
  • Familiarity with weight load calculations and safety factors
  • Basic principles of elevator design and safety regulations
NEXT STEPS
  • Research electric motor torque calculations for lifting applications
  • Explore pulley and gear ratios to optimize lifting speed and efficiency
  • Study safety standards and regulations for non-personnel elevators
  • Investigate materials and construction techniques for building a stable elevator frame
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for hobbyists, engineers, and DIY enthusiasts interested in building custom lifting solutions for equipment and supplies, as well as those seeking to understand the mechanical principles behind elevator systems.

I want to make an elevator lift from an electric motor. The motor has a 42 mm shaft that turns at 1800 rpm. I want to lift approximately 200 pounds total twenty feet high, slowly and safely. I was hoping someone with knowledge of pulleys and gears could help me figure out what I need to accomplish this.

I assume this isn't for people, correct? As a) 200 lb does not provide nearly enough safety factor and b) Elevator operations which carry people require design certification and liability insurance, among other things.

correct. this will be used for equipment and supplies only.
