Discussion Overview

The discussion focuses on issues related to the rendering of LaTeX in old forum posts, specifically how certain characters and formatting lead to incorrect display. Participants explore potential fixes and the impact of changes made to the formatting.

Discussion Character

 • Technical explanation, Debate/contested, Meta-discussion

Main Points Raised

 • One participant identifies a specific LaTeX rendering issue in their old post, noting that the formatting is incorrect and leads to misalignment of text.
 • Another participant suggests looking into switching smilie codes as a potential fix.
 • There is confusion among participants regarding whether any changes have been made, with some noting that the lines appear identical despite reported issues.
 • A participant clarifies that a sad smiley was present in the original post, which contributed to the LaTeX rendering problems, indicating a mix-up between plain text and LaTeX interpretation.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

The discussion remains unresolved, with participants expressing different observations about the rendering issues and potential fixes without reaching a consensus on the best approach.

Contextual Notes

Participants mention specific formatting issues and changes made, but the exact nature of the problems and their solutions are not fully clarified, leaving some assumptions unaddressed.

I noticed that the LaTeX in one of my old posts is messed up. The problems start with this piece:

##C:(a,b)\to \mathbb R^4##

The result should look like this:

##C:(a,b)\to \mathbb R^4##

But instead it looks like this:

##C:(a,b)\to \mathbb R^4##.

Actually it's even worse. The 4 is on a new line, and the rest of the paragraph is messed up even worse. https://www.physicsforums.com/threads/active-and-passive-lorentz-transformation.679890/#post-4316036

Is there a better fix for this than to use "plain" tags as I did above?

Did you change something? The two lines in Fredrik's post look exactly the same here (apart from the period at the end).

Thanks Greg.

For those who found this thread after Greg made the change: There was a sad smiley after the C. In the thread I linked to, the 4 after the ^ appeared on a new line, and then the rest of the paragraph was messed up. Some plain text was interpreted as LaTeX and some LaTeX was interpreted as plain text.
