SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on reducing VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) emissions from boat painting, specifically when using gel coat and 2-stage urethane paints. It highlights that many modern paints are already formulated to minimize VOC levels. However, the use of High-Volume Low-Pressure (HVLP) guns complicates VOC reduction due to the necessity of low viscosity mixtures, which often require lacquer thinner for proper application.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of VOC emissions and their impact on health and environment
  • Familiarity with gel coat and 2-stage urethane paint formulations
  • Knowledge of HVLP spray gun operation and viscosity requirements
  • Awareness of alternative thinning agents to lacquer thinner
NEXT STEPS
  • Research low-VOC paint options specifically designed for marine applications
  • Explore alternative thinning agents that do not contribute to VOC emissions
  • Learn about best practices for using HVLP spray guns to minimize VOC release
  • Investigate regulations and guidelines for VOC emissions in boat painting
USEFUL FOR

Marine painters, boat manufacturers, environmental compliance officers, and anyone involved in the formulation or application of marine coatings seeking to reduce VOC emissions.

I am interested in measures to reduce VOC levels in paint on boats in its outdoor or enclosed space

Are you spraying gel coat? Most paints have been already formulated to reduce VOCs. When spraying 2-stage urethane, it is difficult to reduce VOCs because the HPLV guns require low viscosity, i.e. the mixture is reduced with lacquer thinner.
