It’s a tribute to the strength of democracy in the USA that anyone can run for a political office with few restrictions. Persons who have been convicted of crimes have been elected. It is after all, the right of the individual voter to determine who their representative will be.

It certainly beats a dictatorship. We've had a mixture of good and bad presidents, depending on your point of view. While I can't say I approve of Bush's foreign policy, or foreign relations in general, He did handle the 9/11 incident extremely well.

And let's look at Clinton. Personal life aside, he led the US through an extremely prosperous period of economic growth. If I have to choose between a boy scout who can't lead and a true leader who's a little rough around the edges, I'm all for the prosperity What did he prove? that he's unfaithful..pfft big shock there- let's scrutinize all the world leader's personal lives and see who comes out clean. No one I'd bet. As long as my president is doing his job as president well.. I don't care if he has a donkey fetish.

As far as unusual candidates- well the California governor recall election is a prime example- Gary coleman, and Arnold Shwartzenneger. And Arnie looks to be the front-runner. So yes, ANYONE can run. But the small type to that says that just because you run doesn't mean you can stand up to public scrutiny. You have to have experience in politics, a platform to run on, and good people skills to raise the tens of millions of dollars required to make a serious run. Ross Perot is a good example. All the money, and none of the honey;). But he ran. The system is not perfect, but even if Ozzie Ozbourne and a stripper wouldn't get elected, at least they have the option to try. And that is the most important thing. Weather a candidate can endure public scrutiny- well that's another story.

If Arnie does get elected, then it's another message that politics in the US is less about actual policies and administrative strategy, than how well you are marketed. However expensive, the governorship seems to be sold, not won.

Are you really that familliar with Schwartzinager's policies? Do you know where he stands on industrial incentives? education? zoning? How about the biggies; do you know his position on abortion, capital punishment, gun controll? What environmental policies does he espouse? What are his plans for the state budget? What do you consider to be the main problems with his policies? How do you foresee his plan for the future harming the state of Callifornia?

Trick question because he hasn't yet taken a stance on these issues. it's still too early to be able to make an analysis. However I do like the fact that he won't be swayed by financial gain, so the giants of industry such as the worker's unions won't have him in his side pocket. Thusfar, the only statements he's made are broad ones alluding to "cleaning up the budget" and "making changes to improve the economic downturn". How he will do that remains to be seen. However when compared with the other choices (a lt govenor who can't even decide weather run, a gun toting down and out ex-child star, a porn star, and others) he's looking pretty good so far

The trouble is, I don't know. I should know what his plans are, and in that case I can at least respect him as a possible contender. But from the way he is marketting himself, it seems that he doesn't want people to know, just that he's a movie star and he is somehow going to "terminate" the opposition. I am somehow of the opinion that a politician should be selling himself on his policies, not on his credentials in the entertainment industry. I don't know directly that he's going to "harm the state". No fool ever says that anyways. He has simply not made any indication of being better at the job that say, any Joe Doe you can pick up off the streets.

This thing looks more like an attempt to get rid of Davis than to actually coup the Governorship. The guy who fronted the dough to recall Davis, (Rice? Brice? sth like that) dropped out of the race. CA is in the red with a large population, a figurehead Governor like Schwarczhenegger could ruin health care and education. It's all complete chaos and we'll never know what influence Davis had (or had put on him) during the energy crisis.

I like Gary Coleman for governor...heck, isn't it about time we had government by the people, instead of by career politicians?

Oh, and I love the way that Republican energy deregulation bankrupts a state, and then the Democrat in office is blamed for it...cute! It has been suggested before that the neocons want to intentionally bankrupt government, and then say that government doesn't work. Expect more of the same over the next 5 years.

I had an idea that it may be a territorial thing - those states longitudinally oriented north of Texas and the Buckle of the Bible Belt (Arkansas?) hate California and Oregon and all those blue states, and since the red states control companies that operate in the blue states (Louisiana, Georga Pacific logging co.s & mining interests) it behooves the red states to weaken the blue states.
but there are more democrats than republicans running against Davis, last I heard.
