Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the role of element normals in finite element (FE) mesh analysis, particularly how their orientation (outward or inward) impacts the results of various types of analyses, including structural and thermal analyses. Participants explore the implications of element normals in the context of software like Visual Crash Pam.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation, Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions the importance of element normals in FE mesh and how their direction affects analysis results.
  • Another participant suggests that in heat transfer problems, element normals are significant for defining optical properties such as emissivity.
  • A participant clarifies that the analysis in question involves both structural and thermal components, indicating a coupled analysis approach.
  • It is noted that in thermal analyses, particularly when considering radiation, element normals play a role in defining optical properties.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express varying views on the importance of element normals depending on the type of analysis being conducted. While some agree on their significance in thermal analyses, the overall impact on results remains a topic of discussion without a clear consensus.

Contextual Notes

Participants do not fully explore the implications of negative element IDs in relation to element normals, leaving some assumptions and dependencies on definitions unresolved.

Hi
what is the importance of element normals in a FE mesh ?
How does it matter if it is outward or inward in a FE solver ?
I came across Visual Crash Pam software in which negative element ids would mean element normals in opposite direction. how would this affect the overall result of an analysis?

Thanks

What kind of analysis you are doing??

If you are analysing heat transfer problem, element normals are useful in defining the optical properties like emissivity

it is a coupled analysis involving structural (explicit and implicit) and thermal analysis (implicit)

If it is a thermal analysis & if you are considering radiation also, then element normals help you in defining optical properties.
