AI Thread Summary
Element normals play a crucial role in finite element (FE) mesh analysis, particularly in defining optical properties such as emissivity during thermal analysis. The direction of these normals, whether outward or inward, can significantly impact the results of the analysis, especially in coupled structural and thermal simulations. In software like Visual Crash Pam, negative element IDs indicate that the normals are oriented in the opposite direction, which can lead to inaccuracies in the analysis outcomes. For heat transfer problems, correct normal orientation is essential for accurately modeling radiation effects. Overall, understanding and correctly implementing element normals is vital for reliable FE mesh analysis results.

Hi
what is the importance of element normals in a FE mesh ?
How does it matter if it is outward or inward in a FE solver ?
I came across Visual Crash Pam software in which negative element ids would mean element normals in opposite direction. how would this affect the overall result of an analysis?

Thanks

What kind of analysis you are doing??

If you are analysing heat transfer problem, element normals are useful in defining the optical properties like emissivity

it is a coupled analysis involving structural (explicit and implicit) and thermal analysis (implicit)

If it is a thermal analysis & if you are considering radiation also, then element normals help you in defining optical properties.

Thread 'Turbocharging carbureted petrol 2 stroke engines'
Hi everyone, online I ve seen some images about 2 stroke carbureted turbo (motorcycle derivation engine). Now.. In the past in this forum some members spoke about turbocharging 2 stroke but not in sufficient detail. The intake and the exhaust are open at the same time and there are no valves like a 4 stroke. But if you search online you can find carbureted 2stroke turbo sled or the Am6 turbo. The question is: Is really possible turbocharge a 2 stroke carburated(NOT EFI)petrol engine and...
I need some assistance with calculating hp requirements for moving a load. - The 4000lb load is resting on ball bearing rails so friction is effectively zero and will be covered by my added power contingencies. Load: 4000lbs Distance to travel: 10 meters. Time to Travel: 7.5 seconds Need to accelerate the load from a stop to a nominal speed then decelerate coming to a stop. My power delivery method will be a gearmotor driving a gear rack. - I suspect the pinion gear to be about 3-4in in...
