SUMMARY

The discussion centers on measuring acceleration in a car, identifying three primary controls: the gas pedal, the brake pedal, and the gear shift. Acceleration is defined as the rate of change of velocity, with negative acceleration occurring during braking. Participants clarify that negative acceleration indicates a decrease in speed, exemplified by transitioning from 55 mph to 0 mph over a specified time frame, resulting in a calculated acceleration of -5.5 mph/s or -2.5 m/s².

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic physics concepts, particularly acceleration and velocity.
  • Familiarity with automotive controls, specifically gas and brake pedals.
  • Knowledge of units of measurement for speed and acceleration (mph, m/s²).
  • Basic grasp of how gear shifts affect vehicle speed and acceleration.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the physics of acceleration and deceleration in vehicles.
  • Learn about the mathematical calculations for acceleration using formulas.
  • Explore the impact of different driving techniques on vehicle acceleration.
  • Investigate the role of vehicle weight and engine power in acceleration performance.
USEFUL FOR

Automotive enthusiasts, physics students, and drivers seeking to understand vehicle dynamics and acceleration mechanics.

How many "accelerators" do you have in your car? There are at least 3 controls in the car which can be used to cause the car to accelerate. What are they? What accelerations do they produce?

I simply do not understand this question...are they talking accelerations within the car, or acceleration OF the car as a whole and even still I don't understand...

Remember that acceleration can be negative

Ok so the gas pedal in drive and reverse I suppose, but there's still a third? And what does it mean by what type of acceleration?

Acceleration has a different meaning in physics than everyday
Acceleration is rate of change of velocity, what does negative accelration mean?
How else do you change the velocity in a car.

Ahhh, braking! Right? Negative acceleration just means the velocity is decreasing, so if you go from 0 to 55 mph, then hit the break to stop accelerating to keep at a constant speed, you have negative acceleration?

Almost, braking is negative acceleration - so if you go from 55mph to 0 in 10seconds you have an aceleration of -5.5mph/s or -2.5m/s^2
