Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the simplification of the expression (208 − 18y)/7 into the form (29-2y) + (5-4y)/7. Participants explore the reasoning and methods behind this simplification, focusing on arithmetic and algebraic manipulation.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation
  • Mathematical reasoning

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants note that the simplification can be verified by rewriting (29-2y) + (5-4y)/7 as a single fraction, leading back to (208-18y)/7.
  • Others express curiosity about how to achieve the simplification without reversing the process, indicating a desire for a direct method.
  • One participant points out the arithmetic involved, stating that 7 divides into 208 a total of 29 times with a remainder of 5, and similarly for 18, which divides into 7 twice with a remainder of 4.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the arithmetic involved in the simplification, but there is no consensus on a direct method for achieving the simplification without reversing the process.

Contextual Notes

The discussion does not resolve how to simplify the expression directly without reversing, and it relies on specific arithmetic properties that may not be universally applicable without further context.

In my textbook it simplifies (208 − 18y)/7 to (29-2y) + (5-4y)/7
How does this happen?

How does this happen?

29-2y+\frac{5-4y}{7}=\frac{7\cdot 29 - 7\cdot 2y + 5 - 4y}{7} = \frac{208-18y}{7}

Yes I know that, I also tried it in reverse. But how can it be done without doing it in reverse.

Errr...208 = 29\cdot 7 + 5\,,\,\,and\,\,18 = 7\cdot 2 + 4...what else?!

It's just arithmetic. 7 divides into 208 29 times with remainder 5. 7 divides into 18 twice with remainder 4.
