How Is EMF Induced in a Coil When a Magnetic Field Changes?

SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the calculation of electromotive force (EMF) induced in a coil when a magnetic field changes. A 100-turn, 2.0-cm-diameter coil experiences a magnetic field increase from 0.50 T to 1.50 T over 0.60 seconds. The formula used is EMF = N*d(phi)/dt, where phi represents magnetic flux. The calculated EMF is 0.262 V, and it is confirmed that the sign should be negative by convention.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Faraday's Law of Electromagnetic Induction
  • Familiarity with magnetic flux calculations
  • Knowledge of basic coil parameters (turns, diameter)
  • Ability to perform calculus-based rate of change analysis
NEXT STEPS
  • Study Faraday's Law in detail, focusing on practical applications
  • Explore the concept of magnetic flux and its calculation methods
  • Learn about the significance of sign conventions in electromotive force calculations
  • Investigate the effects of coil geometry on induced EMF
USEFUL FOR

Physics students, electrical engineers, and anyone interested in electromagnetic theory and applications in coil systems.

1. A 100-turn, 2.0-cm-diameter coil is at rest in a horizontal plane. A uniform magnetic field 60 degrees away from vertical increases from 0.50 T to 1.50 T in 0.60 s.

2. EMF = N*d(phi)/dt
phi = flux = ABcos(theta)

3. dB/dt = 1/0.6
EMF = 1000*(1/0.6)*pi*r2*0.5 = 0.262 V

Is that correct? Should the sign be negative?

Is there a reason you're using 1000 turns when the question says 100?

Otherwise, the numerical value is correct. By convention, it should be negative.
