Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the study habits of students or former students in electrical engineering majors, specifically focusing on the number of hours spent studying outside of class. It explores various perspectives on study time expectations and personal experiences.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants mention a common guideline suggesting two hours of study for every hour of class time.
  • One participant notes that while the guideline is a general rule, actual study time can vary significantly based on individual circumstances and the difficulty of the courses.
  • A participant shares a personal experience of studying very little for easier classes but needing to invest more time for harder ones, indicating variability in study strategies.
  • There is a question raised about whether the study hours include tutorials.
  • One participant reports studying approximately 50 to 55 hours per week.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on study time requirements, with no consensus on a specific number of hours, indicating a range of personal experiences and strategies.

Contextual Notes

Some claims depend on individual definitions of study time and may not account for variations in course difficulty or personal study habits.

So to the students or former students who are in electrical engineering majors, how many hours per week outside of class do you study? Or did you?

The rule is two hours of study time per hour of instruction.
If you're in class for 20 hours a week, expect to study/do work at home for another 40 hours a week.

The actual numbers depend on the person and the class. For the easy ones, I could get away with almost no studying 'til the exam and then pull an allnighter. That scheme didn't work quite so well for the hard ones, though I still passed. Well done senior projects are generally a massive time sink.

Does this include tutorials?

50/55 hours
