Hi

How outdated is "Theoretical Physics" by Georg Joos?

I know the quantum mechanics and the nuclear physics sections are obsolete. But what about the statistical physics and the electromagnetism in matter? They look old, but are they obsolete?

Cheers

It's a great classic, but as you say the more modern topics are a bit outdated. The classical treatment of "electromagnetism in matter" is of course also outdated since to really understand properties of matter, including electromagnetism you also need quantum statistics. Nevertheless, the classical model provide some good insight in the qualitative physics. Using it in a heuristical way to introduce the various constitutive relations with the corresponding material constants of the linear-response theory (permittivity, permeability, electric conductivity).
