Discussion Overview

The discussion focuses on analyzing results from electrophoresis, specifically concerning protein samples from various species. Participants explore the challenges of interpreting results, particularly when protein sizes are similar, and the methods for sharing visual data for analysis.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant describes creating a filter paper from electrophoresis results showing protein types from different species and expresses difficulty in analyzing results due to similar protein sizes.
  • Another participant requests the results to be shared for better assistance, emphasizing the need for visual data.
  • A participant inquires about the method for inserting a URL for the image of the results.
  • There is a suggestion to use free image hosting services to share the results, with a note that assistance is not guaranteed.
  • After sharing the image link, a participant questions the purpose of the analysis and comments on the quality of the gel results, indicating uncertainty about the quantitative analysis due to smearing and uneven running of samples.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the need to share visual results for analysis, but there is no consensus on the interpretation of the results or the effectiveness of the electrophoresis performed.

Contextual Notes

Participants express uncertainty regarding the quantitative analysis of the gel results due to issues such as smearing and uneven sample running, which may affect the interpretation of the data.

Hello! By performing electrophoresis, I have created a filter paper which shows the protein types from different species of fish, wild pig and chicken. Unfortunately, problems have arisen regarding the analysis of the results since most protein samples vary between 15 and 25 kilodaltons. Can you please help me? (I can send the results to you.) Thank you in advance!

If you want to get help, please show the results here, either attaching them to your message, or posting a link to the file hosted elsewhere.

I have taken a picture of the results, however how should I insert the URL of the picture?

Thank you! How should you make the picture URL? It is a JEPG image.

Look for a free image hosting services, like for example imageshack (but it is not the only one, and not necessarily the best one at the moment, that's just the only one I happen to remember; I don't use these services as I post images on my own server).

Please note - I don't want to sound like "if you post the picture, we will help you". There is no guarantee anyone will be able to help you here, I am just introducing you to the way this forum works.

Introduction to SDS-PAGE.

It appears as if you did SDS-PAGE - if I am incorrect, you can ignore the above link. Might I ask what it is that you wish to determine from this gel? Given the smearing/uneven running of your samples, I am not sure how much you can quantitatively determine from this gel.
