How Strong is a 5 Tesla Magnetic Field?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

A 5 Tesla magnetic field is significantly stronger than typical magnetic fields encountered in everyday life. For context, Earth's magnetic field is approximately 0.0001 Tesla, while a bar magnet generates around 0.01 Tesla. In practical applications, a Bainbridge mass spectrometer operates at 0.4 Tesla, and large electromagnets reach up to 1.5 Tesla. When a piece of iron is placed in a 5 Tesla field, it experiences induced magnetization in the direction of the magnetic field.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of magnetic field strength and measurement in Tesla
  • Basic knowledge of electromagnetism principles
  • Familiarity with magnetic materials and their properties
  • Experience with scientific instruments like mass spectrometers
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the effects of high magnetic fields on different materials
  • Explore applications of 5 Tesla magnetic fields in scientific research
  • Learn about the design and function of electromagnets
  • Investigate safety protocols when working with strong magnetic fields
USEFUL FOR

Physicists, engineers, and researchers interested in magnetism, as well as anyone working with high-field magnetic applications.

this is just a question i can't seem to find an answer for, but i was wondering how strong a 5 tesla magnetic field is?

Pretty freaking strong.

For comparison, these are some approximate mag field strengths, in tesla:
At Earth's surface: 10^-4
Near a small bar magnet: 10^-2
Bainbridge mass spectrometer: 0.4
Near a big electrommagnet: 1.5

what would happen if i placed a piece of iron in a 5 tesla field?

Duh? It would be attracted to the B field? :-p

But I guess you knew that.

Correct answer...
A net magnetization would be induced in the iron in the direction of the field.

BTW, What are you using to produce the 5 Tesla?
