Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around acquiring Fortran programming software, specifically focusing on commercial licenses and suggestions for obtaining a Fortran compiler. The scope includes practical advice for students using Fortran for simulations in their studies.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation, Homework-related, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about how to buy Fortran software for academic purposes, seeking suggestions.
  • Another participant suggests contacting a company that sells Fortran compilers but criticizes the initial question as vague and trivial.
  • Some participants mention GNU Fortran as a free alternative that works well for programming needs.
  • Additional recommendations include gfortran, highlighting its integration with IDEs and useful tools like gprof and gdb.
  • A later reply references a previous thread related to Fortran for computational fluid dynamics, suggesting continuity in the discussion.
  • One participant encourages the original poster to consult with their faculty or project advisor for recommendations on obtaining the compiler and mentions potential resources from the school's IT department.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the necessity of a commercial license versus using free alternatives like GNU Fortran. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the best approach to acquiring the software.

Contextual Notes

Some assumptions about the original poster's needs and the context of their studies are not fully articulated, and there is a lack of clarity on the specific requirements for the Fortran software.

Hello,, I want to know how to buy the Fortran software,? I use Fortran programming to simulate some my work for my study. Do you have any suggestion about that??

You need to contact a company that sells a Fortran compiler.

Your question is both vague and trivial. What is it exactly that you need help with?

I would also recommend gfortran. I like the GNU suite because it's widely used, it integrates well with most IDEs and you can use useful tools like gprof and gdb.

Looks to be related to his earlier thread:

Also, @ulfaazmi -- have you spoken with your faculty/project advisor about this? Do they have any suggestions for where to get the compiler and development system from? Are you going to be wanting to tie into a graphics display program of some sort? Sometimes, your school's IT department may be able to get good deals on some software packages, or may already have some Network or Floating licenses available.
