How to Calculate the Moment of Inertia of an Assembly?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on calculating the mass moment of inertia for an assembly consisting of a ring with an inner diameter of 7 inches, an outer diameter of 11 inches, and a thickness of 1 inch, along with several rectangular boxes mounted on its periphery. To determine the total moment of inertia, one must calculate the inertia of the ring and the individual boxes, then sum these values. The provided link to the Wikipedia page on moment of inertia serves as a foundational resource for understanding the necessary calculations.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of mass moment of inertia
  • Familiarity with geometric properties of rings and rectangular boxes
  • Basic knowledge of rotational dynamics
  • Ability to perform integral calculus for composite shapes
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the formula for the moment of inertia of a ring and rectangular prisms
  • Learn about the parallel axis theorem for composite bodies
  • Explore examples of calculating moment of inertia for complex assemblies
  • Review resources on rotational dynamics and their applications in engineering
USEFUL FOR

Mechanical engineers, physics students, and anyone involved in the design and analysis of rotating systems will benefit from this discussion.

I am trying to find out how to calculate the
mass moment of inertia of an assembly.
I have basically a ring 7 inch ID,11 Inch OD
and 1 inch thick.

On this ring I have several rectangular boxes mounted
of various sizes around its periphery (screwed.)
This ring will rotate about its axis along with those
boxes of different sizes.
How do I calculate the inertia of the assembly?

please help.

This is a HW/Schoolwork-type question. So it belongs in the HW/Coursework forum even if it isn't a homework assignment.
