AI Thread Summary
Simulation of parallel beams for neutrons and photons can be achieved using MCNP5 or MCNPX by utilizing the "sdef" parameters, specifically "dir," "axs," "vec," and "rad." A thesis on neutron spectrometer design and simulations may provide additional insights and methodologies for these simulations. The discussion emphasizes the importance of correctly setting up these parameters to achieve accurate beam simulations. Participants are encouraged to explore the linked thesis for further guidance. Understanding these techniques is crucial for effective simulation in nuclear data applications.

tl;dr : how to simulate a parallel neutron beam
Hi,

I am interested in simulation of parallel beams for neutrons and photons (separately of course). Any ideas on how to simulate them in MCNP5 or MCNPX?

I found this thesis titled: DESIGN OF A NEUTRON SPECTROMETER AND SIMULATIONS OF NEUTRON MULTIPLICITY EXPERIMENTS WITH NUCLEAR DATA PERTURBATIONS. I hope it helps;

Hi,

Hello, I'm currently trying to compare theoretical results with an MCNP simulation. I'm using two discrete sets of data, intensity (probability) and linear attenuation coefficient, both functions of energy, to produce an attenuated energy spectrum after x-rays have passed through a thin layer of lead. I've been running through the calculations and I'm getting a higher average attenuated energy (~74 keV) than initial average energy (~33 keV). My guess is I'm doing something wrong somewhere...
