I cannot figure out how to not use the quick reply box

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the lack of a separate, larger editing box for replies, which was available in the previous software version. Users express frustration that clicking "Reply" now directs them to a smaller quick reply box at the bottom of the thread instead of opening a new page. There is a suggestion that the editing box expands with the length of the post in certain browsers, like Chropera and Firefox. However, participants agree that a larger editing box is still desired for better writing space. Overall, the conversation highlights a need for improved reply functionality in the forum's current format.

Is there no button for a new reply which takes me to a new page with more space to see my writing? Is that to old fashioned?

Click PREVIEW under quick reply box.

I think what he wants is a larger editing box, not simply a preview. I don't see any way to get a larger editing box, either.

Under the old software, hitting the "Reply" button underneath an individual post opened up a separate page with a large editing box. Now it simply takes you to the editing box at the bottom of the thread, and pastes in a quote of the post being replied to.

Under Chropera editing box grows together with the post size, I assumed it does the same under other browsers.

You're right! At least it also does this under Firefox (Mac OS). I've surely seen this before, but it didn't stick in my mind. I was thinking the edit box acquires a scroll bar when the post becomes long enough.

This what was i ment. For some reason I hadn't checked what would happen if I used up all the lines in the box. The dynamic box is pretty smart!

I want to thank those members who interacted with me a couple of years ago in two Optics Forum threads. They were @Drakkith, @hutchphd, @Gleb1964, and @KAHR-Alpha. I had something I wanted the scientific community to know and slipped a new idea in against the rules. Thank you also to @berkeman for suggesting paths to meet with academia. Anyway, I finally got a paper on the same matter as discussed in those forum threads, the fat lens model, got it peer-reviewed, and IJRAP...
About 20 years ago, in my mid-30s (and with a BA in economics and a master's in business), I started taking night classes in physics hoping to eventually earn the science degree I'd always wanted but never pursued. I found physics forums and used it to ask questions I was unable to get answered from my textbooks or class lectures. Unfortunately, work and life got in the way and I never got further the freshman courses. Well, here it is 20 years later. I'm in my mid-50s now, and in a...
