The discussion centers around a video featuring a "science" guy who claims that the visibility of a ship's mast before the rest of the ship is due to the Earth's curvature, which some participants argue is incorrect. They suggest that the phenomenon is actually caused by light refraction due to temperature differentials at the ocean's surface. The conversation highlights a mix of amusement and frustration regarding the absurdity of the claims made in the video, with participants mocking the idea that one can only see with the top half of their iris. There are also concerns about the reliability of subtitles in the video and whether it might be a prank or satire. The participants express skepticism about the scientific literacy of individuals who make bold claims without understanding basic concepts, reflecting on broader issues of ignorance and fundamentalism in discussions about science. The thread concludes with humorous references to "Pac-Man physics" and the notion of a toroidal Earth, further emphasizing the absurdity of flat Earth theories.

That was great! I especially enjoyed the parts where he described things in the distance as being blurry until they got closer. Or that things in the distance looked round but were actually straight when viewed up close. Those glasses of his! Killer!

edit - did anyone else notice the science guy referring to evidence gained from spaceships, satellites and shuttles? If spaceships isn't referring to sattelites and shuttles, then what other kind of spaceships is he collecting data from?

Space probes such as Voyager or Pioneer?

One thing about arabic though, it sounds very scholarly to the ears when they talk with the emphasis on words and use the hand motions. Everything they say seems more thought out with logic.

I love his book with the cover, 'SCIENCE'.

I'll just chalk it up to translation. I suppose you are right. It just struck me as an odd word to use in that discussion.

Maybe they just played too much Pac-Man and think that if you go one way for too long, you come out on the other side?

That would make the Earth a torus.

Ok, I know what a torus is, but I'm having trouble imagining how that solves the problem of leaving to the west, and coming back from the east, while remaining flat.

Pacman physics is the only thing I can think of.

A bloody large torus - on the surface it would look more or less exactly as it does now. Except of course, you'll see the rest of the world on the inside plane.

That's called the "the Earth is round" theory (as opposed to flat earth)
