Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the concept of "impossible" actions or tasks, with participants sharing humorous and creative examples of things they consider impossible. The scope includes playful, hypothetical scenarios rather than serious philosophical or scientific inquiries.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants suggest various humorous impossible tasks, such as marrying a celebrity, changing a duvet cover in a moving caravan, or unicycling while juggling.
  • Others propose that certain tasks, like pulling a quark out of a hadron or combing a hairy sphere flat, are genuinely impossible based on definitions and logical reasoning.
  • A few participants challenge the notion of impossibility, claiming that imagination allows for the accomplishment of seemingly impossible tasks.
  • Some participants express skepticism about the seriousness of the discussion, suggesting that the context is light-hearted and not meant to be taken literally.
  • There are references to Gödel's theorem as an example of a well-defined impossibility, further complicating the discussion of what constitutes "impossible."

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally present a variety of competing views on what constitutes an impossible task, with no clear consensus reached. Some argue for the impossibility of certain actions based on logical reasoning, while others maintain that such tasks can be imagined or accomplished.

Contextual Notes

Some statements rely on subjective interpretations of impossibility, and there are unresolved assumptions about the definitions of tasks considered impossible. The discussion also includes playful banter that may obscure serious engagement with the topic.

Who May Find This Useful

Readers interested in humorous takes on philosophical concepts, creativity in problem-solving, or light-hearted debates about impossibility may find this discussion engaging.

How many impossible things, actions, what ever, can you think of?

I know it is impossible for me to marry Yasmeen Ghauri. Does that count?

Changing a duvet cover in the back of a moving caravan.

Playing the sax solo from Gerry Rafferties Baker street while kicking a football up an escalator.

Opening a bag of Doritoes whilst standing in a hammock.

Being right in an argument against an angry woman.

Reading a copy of The Daily Mail without rolling your eyes, regardless of how right or left wing you are.

Unicycling backwards across a tight rope juggling whilst drunk.

Now that's impossible, but not as impossible as teaching a snake to lap dance.

As Cantor once said, some things are more impossible than others.

That is not, strictly speaking, impossible. Very unlikely, I admit it. Unlikely things are easy to imagine :
  • Spending one day without PF ?
  • Finding a serious thead in GD ? (ok, that was inappropriate )

[*]Writing more than 10k lines of code in a day, compiling, and finding to your great delight that you have no bug

You are all very wrong. Everything above that has been listed as being impossible are all actually possible. Literally, in the last 3 minutes, I was able to accomplish all of them.
