SUMMARY

The discussion centers on persistent download stoppages experienced on a Linksys network with Sympatico High-Speed service. Users report that the issue occurs on both wired and wireless connections, with symptoms including page freezes lasting 20-60 seconds. The primary cause identified is packet loss, potentially due to overloaded upstream routers, which can be diagnosed using tools like traceroute and ping. Recommendations include changing the wireless channel and using a network traffic analyzer to pinpoint the source of the delays.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of packet loss and its impact on network performance.
  • Familiarity with using traceroute and ping commands for network diagnostics.
  • Basic knowledge of wireless networking, specifically Linksys routers.
  • Experience with network traffic analysis tools, such as Ethereal (Wireshark).
NEXT STEPS
  • Run a traceroute to identify any packet loss at upstream routers.
  • Change the wireless channel on the Linksys router to reduce interference.
  • Use a network traffic analyzer like Ethereal to monitor connection hangs.
  • Contact the ISP to report any identified issues with upstream routers.
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for network administrators, IT professionals troubleshooting connectivity issues, and anyone experiencing slow internet speeds on a Linksys network with Sympatico High-Speed service.

You know, I am sure it's my imagination, but it sure seems as if unplugging the AC from my laptop to carry it into the other room short circuits the delay.

Like, it'll hang for 20 seconds, and I'll decide to go check the desktop. I'll unplug my laptop, and it will chug-a-chug-chug access the hard drive for 3 seconds. And then - zing - the page will load.

It's done this a dozen times now.

Things seem to be calming down this time of night. My pings only time out every 30 or 40 requests. But I did determine that these ones are happening on both systems simultaneously .

Your laptop is hitting the disk during these "hangs?"

Have you tried changing the channel the wireless signal is on? If there's some other signal present causing interference then most likely the computer would still show connected status but data would not be routed correctly resulting in erratic behavior.

I think your linksys is going mental..

Try updating the firmware..

1 * * 15 ms 192.168.1.1

15 ms is a long time, seems that either your router doesn't have the resources to reply or it can't for some reason..
