SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the creation of an IP forwarding table for an IP Router with four interfaces, specifically focusing on the correct CIDR notation for forwarding packets. The proposed entries include Interface 0 with 224.0.0.0/10, Interface 1 with 224.64.0.0/16, and Interface 2 with 225.0.0.0/9. A discrepancy arises regarding Interface 2, where the solution manual suggests 225.0.0.0/7 instead. This indicates a need for clarity on CIDR notation and its application in routing tables.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of IP routing concepts
  • Familiarity with CIDR (Classless Interdomain Routing) notation
  • Knowledge of binary representation of IP addresses
  • Basic networking principles and packet forwarding
NEXT STEPS
  • Research CIDR notation and its implications in IP routing
  • Learn about IP forwarding tables and their construction
  • Study the differences between CIDR prefixes and their binary representations
  • Explore common routing protocols and their configurations
USEFUL FOR

Network engineers, students studying computer networking, and anyone involved in configuring IP routing and forwarding tables will benefit from this discussion.

Homework Statement

Consider an IP Router with four link interfaces numbered 0 to 3. Packets are to be forwarded according to the table:

Write down an IP forwarding table with ve entries that forwards packets to the correct interfaces. Use CIDR (Classless Interdomain Routing) notation for the network addresses.

The Attempt at a Solution

Interface 0: 11100000 00 -> 224.0.0.0/10

Interface 1: 11100000 01000000 -> 224.64.0.0/16

Interface 2: 11100001 0 -> 225.0.0.0/9 (Solution manual says it should be 1110000 -> 225.0.0.0/7 --- Why/How?)
