Is Discrete Mathematics Hard and Is It Pure or Applied?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

Discrete Mathematics encompasses both pure and applied mathematics, serving as a foundational element in various fields such as information science and operations research. The perceived difficulty of Discrete Mathematics is subjective and varies based on individual strengths and preferences, particularly in areas like combinatorics. Ultimately, its complexity is determined by the learner's approach and mindset.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic mathematical concepts
  • Familiarity with combinatorial principles
  • Knowledge of applications in information science
  • Awareness of operations research methodologies
NEXT STEPS
  • Explore combinatorial techniques in depth
  • Research applications of Discrete Mathematics in information science
  • Study operations research methods and their mathematical foundations
  • Investigate the principles of pure mathematics as they relate to Discrete Mathematics
USEFUL FOR

Students, educators, and professionals in mathematics, computer science, and engineering who seek to understand the dual nature of Discrete Mathematics and its applications in various domains.

Don't you think this is a rather subjective question?
Besides that, it depends on where you start from, which ways of thinking suits you more and which less. E.g. I'm pretty bad when it comes to counting, so combinatorics isn't really one of my favorites. But there are people, who like it.
Is it pure or applied math?
Both.
In it's principles, it is pure math. Its applications on the other hand vary from information science over to operations research and strike almost everything you can think of. It's a discrete world out there.

It's as hard as you would like. Both pure and applied.
