Is it Realistic to Write a Research Paper on Quantum Physics in High School?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the feasibility of writing a research paper on quantum physics while in high school, particularly in the context of preparing for a scholarship. Participants explore the challenges and considerations involved in undertaking such a project within a limited timeframe.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Debate/contested, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses a strong interest in quantum physics and inquires about the realism of completing a research paper by October, noting their current engagement with relevant literature.
  • Another participant suggests that while it may be challenging without a background in quantum physics, it is not impossible, and recommends seeking guidance from professors at the college level.
  • A third participant echoes the sentiment that while it is a significant undertaking, the motivation to try is important and could outweigh potential regrets of not attempting it.
  • A fourth participant questions the nature of the paper, asking whether it is an essay on quantum physics or a research paper involving quantitative analysis, indicating that the expectations may vary based on the contest requirements.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that writing a research paper on quantum physics is a challenging but potentially achievable goal for a high school student, though opinions vary on the feasibility based on background knowledge and resources.

Contextual Notes

Participants note the importance of having access to a lab for practical research and the potential variability in contest expectations regarding the use of technical language and quantitative data.

Who May Find This Useful

High school students interested in pursuing research in physics, educators advising students on research projects, and individuals preparing for academic competitions or scholarships in STEM fields.

I want to do a research paper on quantum physics for a scholarship. I am really awed by it and want to learn everything about it. My question is, is it realistic to write a research paper on quantum physics and have it complete by october? I have bought some books on it and am reading them now. I might major in this in college(have computer engineering as major right now).

Thanks, I am fascinated by it.

Anything is possible. Do you have access to a lab, it would make doing research much more practical. I would say it may be difficult if you have no background in Quantum Physics, but not impossible.
I would talk to some profs at your college that specialize, and if you decide to go for it good luck.

It would be quite a task, but like the Captain says "Anything is possible".

The real question is, will you have any regrets if you don't try?

Are you in high school? Depending on the contest they may or may not be interested in seeing many numbers, greek letters, or equations. Are you writing an essay about quantum physics, or on/of quantum physics?
