Is Reality Partially Simulated?

AI Thread Summary
The discussion explores the concept of reality as a blend of physical and simulated elements, likening it to a holodeck where certain aspects like gravity and walls are real, while consciousness and other elements may be simulated. This idea draws parallels to themes in films like The Matrix, where characters exist in a simulated environment but are physically connected to a larger reality. The conversation suggests that while the idea is intriguing, it should be approached with originality, as similar concepts have been explored in works like Lem's "Futurological Congress." The discussion concludes by noting that the topic has been sufficiently covered and suggests closing the thread.

or even a percentage of it. i know this is more of a philosophy question but could it be like a holodeck, where the gravity, floor and walls are real but the rest of it is a simulation? (this is a metaphor of course.) so space and gravity as an example are a simulation but consciousness and matter is not. or vica versa. i looked on google but couldn't find anything like this. i know that if an idea hasnt been thought of, it doesn't necessarily make it correct or if an idea has already been thought of it doesn't necessarily make it incorrect.

As a rule, we don't discuss philosophy. Your question is reminiscent of The Matrix movie plots where the actors are real, living in a simulation with simulated bodies. When they awaken, they see the harsh reality of being hooked up to a giant network of other humans controlled by an alien intelligence.

You could develop your idea into a sci-fi story although it should be original and not a copy of The Matrix idea.

... but be aware of Lem's futurological congress that has a similar setup.

We've pretty much covered this topic and so it's a good time to close the thread.

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
