SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the concept of reality potentially being partially simulated, drawing parallels to the holodeck and The Matrix. Participants explore the idea that while physical elements like gravity and walls may be real, consciousness and matter could exist within a simulation. The conversation highlights the philosophical implications of such a scenario and suggests that the idea could serve as inspiration for original sci-fi storytelling, cautioning against copying existing narratives like The Matrix or Lem's futurological congress.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of simulation theory
  • Familiarity with philosophical concepts related to reality
  • Knowledge of virtual reality (VR) technology
  • Awareness of sci-fi literature and film, particularly The Matrix
NEXT STEPS
  • Research simulation theory and its implications in philosophy
  • Explore the concept of consciousness in relation to virtual reality
  • Analyze Lem's futurological congress for parallels in simulated realities
  • Develop original sci-fi narratives that incorporate elements of simulated environments
USEFUL FOR

Philosophers, sci-fi writers, and enthusiasts of virtual reality concepts who are interested in exploring the boundaries of reality and simulation.

or even a percentage of it. i know this is more of a philosophy question but could it be like a holodeck, where the gravity, floor and walls are real but the rest of it is a simulation? (this is a metaphor of course.) so space and gravity as an example are a simulation but consciousness and matter is not. or vica versa. i looked on google but couldn't find anything like this. i know that if an idea hasnt been thought of, it doesn't necessarily make it correct or if an idea has already been thought of it doesn't necessarily make it incorrect.

As a rule, we don't discuss philosophy. Your question is reminiscent of The Matrix movie plots where the actors are real, living in a simulation with simulated bodies. When they awaken, they see the harsh reality of being hooked up to a giant network of other humans controlled by an alien intelligence.

You could develop your idea into a sci-fi story although it should be original and not a copy of The Matrix idea.

... but be aware of Lem's futurological congress that has a similar setup.

Doesn't a VR video game fit this description?

We've pretty much covered this topic and so it's a good time to close the thread.
