Undergrad Is simulation considered a type of quantitative analysis?

Click For Summary
Simulation can be considered a form of quantitative analysis, particularly in the context of data modeling and analysis. The discussion highlights the need for precise definitions of quantitative analysis, which can vary across fields like chemistry and economics. While some argue that simulation does not fit traditional definitions, others suggest that analyzing simulation data is a valid approach. There is no universally accepted definition of quantitative analysis in the context of solar system studies, which adds to the complexity. Ultimately, using simulation in a presentation is deemed acceptable despite differing opinions.

Hello,

I've been asked to talk about a time where I have used quantitative analysis.

I once used simulation of the solar system to find out more about things like close approaches, and Gladmans criteria

I was wondering if simulation is considered a quantitative method of analysis and if the example would be therefore appropriate to use

Thank you in advance

My two cents: I would consider it quantitative analysis.

You would need precise definitions of these terms.

I would say it is part of general data modeling/ data analysis, the applied part.

Quantitative analysis needs to be defined. I am familiar with a chemistry definition, but I don't know what a general definition would be. In chemistry it has nothing to do with simulation.

Only reasonable answer I can think of, is analysis of simulation data, as sample data for situation being simulated.

There might not be any authoritative definition of "quantitative analysis" in the field of close approaches in the solar system. There certainly are definitions for chemistry and economics that are completely different from each other.

My advice is to go with the simulation presentation and let others complain if they want to.
