Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the safety and methods of sterilizing jars, particularly in the context of home canning. Participants share personal experiences and propose different techniques, highlighting potential dangers associated with improper sealing and handling.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant describes a personal injury from steam escaping a jar due to an imperfect seal, rating the pain as a 7 out of 10.
  • Another participant suggests that creating a vacuum seal by shaking the jar can lead to difficulties opening it, resulting in a potential injury from using a screwdriver, also rated as a 6/7 for pain.
  • Some participants emphasize the importance of using a hot water bath for sterilization, arguing against alternative methods.
  • Several posts introduce humorous or unrelated ideas about using explosives or flame torches for lawn care, diverging from the main topic of jar sterilization.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the proper method for sterilizing jars, with some advocating for the hot water bath approach while others share alternative methods that have led to injuries. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the safest practices.

Contextual Notes

Participants reference external sources for canning guidelines, but there is no consensus on the best practices or the associated risks of different methods.

So how dangerous can this be, well dangerous enough for me to have a great welt across my arm, i thought all one would have to do is fill the jar with boiling water and give it a shake, wrong, the water finds its way past an imperfect seal and blasts out a jet of steam,
on a 1 to 10 it is a 7 for ouch factor.

Alternatively add boiling water and shake - lid forms a perfect seal.
Water cools, creates vacuum, can't get lid off.
Use sharp screwdriver to try and lift lid to let air in.
Screwdriver slips and embeds in palm of hand - ouch factor 6/7.

I was thinking the other day, maybe next summer I can figure out how to cut my lawn with explosives. Y'know... shaped charges, like they use for opening a safe?

Hilarious - slightly rebranded it can be “Spaceballs - the Flame Thrower!”
