I Is the space elevator affected by lightening, sprites, emf?

AI Thread Summary
A space elevator's interaction with lightning, sprites, and electromagnetic fields is questioned regarding its impact on charge separation in the solar system. The discussion references the shuttle space tether experiment, which involved a tether moving through Earth's magnetic field. It is noted that a stationary space elevator would likely not generate a current like the moving tether. The potential effects of such a structure on atmospheric phenomena remain uncertain. Overall, the implications of a space elevator on electrical phenomena warrant further investigation.

Does a conductor from space to Earth mess with the separation of charges in the solar system?

Haven't seen the question before --- it has to do something.

In that experiment the tether was moving through the Earth's' magnetic field. A space elevator would be stationary so would presumably not generate a current.

Is a homemade radio telescope realistic? There seems to be a confluence of multiple technologies that makes the situation better than when I was a wee lad: software-defined radio (SDR), the easy availability of satellite dishes, surveillance drives, and fast CPUs. Let's take a step back - it is trivial to see the sun in radio. An old analog TV, a set of "rabbit ears" antenna, and you're good to go. Point the antenna at the sun (i.e. the ears are perpendicular to it) and there is...
