Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the concept of the block universe in the context of quantum mechanics and relativity, exploring whether future events are predetermined and how this relates to theories of spacetime.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants suggest that the block universe implies all future events are predetermined, referencing Einstein's relativity.
  • One participant mentions the application of a quantum operator to argue that if the present state exists, the future must also exist.
  • Another participant believes that special relativity (4D spacetime) supports the block universe theory, but notes that the existence of Closed Timelike Loops would be necessary for definitive proof.
  • There is a distinction made between existence and predetermined outcomes, depending on whether one subscribes to single- or multi-history theories.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the implications of relativity and quantum mechanics for the block universe concept, indicating that multiple competing perspectives remain without consensus.

Contextual Notes

The discussion includes assumptions about the nature of time and existence, as well as the implications of different interpretations of quantum mechanics and relativity, which remain unresolved.

I think QMers may know something about this.

you mean "block time" or multiverse?

i mean the one block universe, which means all "future things" are predetermined like a block. I think it derived from Albert Einstein's relativity.

The future is what you get when you apply the operator
Exp(-i H t/hbar) to the present state. So, given that the present state exists, the future also exists.

I believe SR (4D spacetime) is an argument for the blockworld
However only the existence of Closed Timelike Loops will be an ultimate proof
Finally exists <> predetermined (depending on single- or multi- history theories)
